GOAT Fiscal Sponsorship Policy
Fiscal Sponsorship may be a fit if…
You are an active and aligned member of the GOAT community and would benefit from having a non-profit or fiscal sponsor to hold project funds. The benefit may be: you cannot receive the money other ways; the cost or effort to receive it other ways is burdensome; you want to manage the funding transparently through Open Collective and/or across multiple partners (to simplify billing); and potentially for other reasons.
Example
Two organizations involved in GOAT want their tools to become interoperable utilizing a data transfer standard of a third GOAT-affiliated organization. Funding for this effort is coming from a non-profit and per their requirements is best administered via another non-profit. Because none of the three organizations involved in the work are non-profits (or are not US non-profits), utilizing GOAT’s Open Collective financial management infrastructure is the best avenue for administering those funds.
What you should do
Contact the GOAT Organizing Committee at [email protected] with your needs, like:
- The purpose of the funding
- The amount of funding
- The source of funding
- The expected distribution (to who), budget and project plan (or concept, proposal, etc).
- The reason working through GOAT will make the difference for you.
- How and why this is values-aligned with GOAT’s goals and mission.
Based on a conversation with the GOAT Organizers and our fiscal sponsor we will determine if this is appropriate and feasible at this time. Understand that even if a project is a good fit, GOAT has limited staff time and we may not be able to handle the fiscal management of the project.
Cost
GOAT’s fiscal sponsor charges an 8% for all money we receive, including in this case. In addition, GOAT itself will typically charge additional overhead depending on the size, scale, and complexity of the project on a project by project basis. In addition, we may require a signed agreement to ensure responsible use of funds, identification of responsible parties, timelines, and other information. This would help to make transparent and align expectations for GOAT, our fiscal sponsor and the members using the funds.
